What We Do
The Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project provides support for asylum seekers and refugees in the following ways :
- Accommodates and supports two households of asylum seekers (14 men at present), most of whom have been detained in Immigration Detention Centres
- Pays rent and/or utilities for a number of people on bridging visas
- Partially supports many people on bridging visas and temporary protection visas in the community
- Visits asylum seekers at Maribyrnong Detention Centre and takes phone cards, tobacco, toiletries, food, clothing etc to those being detained
- Has assisted a number of asylum seekers who have decided to leave Australia because they had lost hope of being given refugee status
- Assists in procuring legal services where possible for some asylum seekers
- Networks with other groups who are supporting asylum seekers
- Has organised a number of information nights, and has recently produced a film (The Veil) to raise awareness of the situation of asylum seekers
- Has lobbied the government in favour of a number of people who faced significant difficulty
